Poetry Picks for Poetry Month!

"scooby door was trying to tell us something when every time that monster mask got snatched off it was a greedy white dude." --Danez Smith, Homie

April is National Poetry Month, so we're celebrating the lyrical word with an in-store display! Here are five picks from our display we wanted to highlight.

Ballads by Sharon Olds

This is a collection opens with quarantine poems, then expands into long-sentenced poems of Olds' childhood, adulthood, her whiteness and privilege, and how we are ruining the earth.

Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude by Ross Gay

This incredible, award-winning collection of poems is a meditation on things that go away: the seasons, loved ones, and how to find peace in the movement.

Deaf Republic: Poems by Ilya Kaminsky

In an occupied country during political unrest, a deaf boy is is shot and killed, and all of the citizens go deaf. The story follows citizens as they navigate a world of violence through silence.

Frank: Sonnets by Diane Seuss

Diane Seuss uses frank, poetic language to tell the story of her life: poetry and punk, AIDS, addiction, childhood to motherhood--it's her whole life in compelling language and imagery.

Homie: Poems by Danez Smith

Steeped in the loss of a close friend, Smith's poetry collection is an ode to friendship and its saving qualities. Family, chosen or not, can be the saving grace during these tumultuous times.
