A bad fairy tale has some simple goddamn moral. A great fairy tale tells the truth.” —Victor LaValle, The Changeling

There are some great movies and TV shows coming up in the next year, but as we are a bookstore we are always going to argue the book was better. Here are some great books to read before you head to the theaters!

A Haunting in Venice [Movie Tie-In]: A Hercule Poirot Mystery by Agatha Christie: This Agatha Christie classic is originally known as Hallowe'en Party, which inspired the movie. At the preparations for a Halloween party, a young girl boasts of having seen a murder a few years ago. No one believes her, but when she winds up murdered, the fantastic, if peculiar, Poirot is called upon to solve this horrifying crime.

The Changeling by Victor LaValle: In this fantastical thriller, Apollo Kagwa experiences loss after loss: first his dad leaves when he's young and he has nothing to remember him by but books and strange dreams, then his wife disappears after committing an atrocious act. Now Apollo sets on a quest to find a wife and child.

Wool: Book One of the Silo Series by Hugh Howey: This is the first book in the award-winning dystopian trilogy. The outside world is off-limits due to its toxicity, and talk of it is forbidden. Humanity is forced to live underground in a silo. Punishment for those of the outside-optimistic-mindset are given what they want: the outside. Once the old sheriff was given his outside ticket, Juliette is named the new sheriff, however things are so clear cut in this underground world.

The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Tales by Edgar Allen Poe: A horrifying and beloved classic by one of the most well-known horror authors in the world. The specific tale that is getting the movie-spotlight is the short story "The Fall of the House of Usher." The tale follows an unnamed narrator visiting their old friend, Roderick Usher, and becoming increasingly worried for the health of his friend and his friends sister as unnatural things occur during the visit.

Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam: In this suspenseful novel, a family escapes to a remote house in Long Island away from the bustle of New York City life. As they settle into relaxing luxury removed from society and no cell service, the calm spell is broken when the owners of the home appear in the middle of the night in a panic and say a blackout swept through the city and have come to the house for safety. Who can be trusted? Who can't be trusted?
