July New Releases We're Excited For!

July has some great new releases coming and we're very excited for everything to come, but there are a few that stand out from the rest! Our book buyers, Llalan and Jordan, breakdown the new releases we're most excited for!

Here are our Fiction and Nonfiction New Releases!

What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July? by Frederick Douglass

The inclusion of this edition of Douglass' incisive anti-slavery speech is probably self-evident, but I'll add that everyone should, at some point, read this most influential of Americans.

How We Do It: Black Writers on Craft, Practice, and Skill edited by Jericho Brown

More than 30 Black writers reflect on how being a person of color inherently affects the way they interpret and convey the world. A book on the craft of writing that everyone can benefit from.

Out July 4!

Temple Folk by Aaliyah Bilal

I'm a sucker for a good short story collection, especially one about folks that aren't readily represented in modern literature. These stories about Muslim Black families in the US promise to be insightful and compelling.

Out July 4!

The Librarianist by Patrick deWitt

Who can resist a story about a retired librarian, beneath whose seemingly ordinary life lies an extraordinary story? Not I. Author deWitt writes with humor and compassion.

Out July 4!

The Tao of the Backup Catcher: Playing Baseball for the Love of the Game by Tim Brown with Erik Kratz

My favorite season of the year might be baseball season. This is a book about the players who may never see the spotlight but have a true passion for the sport.

Ripe by Sarah Rose Etter

Etter writes tales that are sharp as knives, surreal and, at the same time, brutally true. This novel takes on the tech world through a woman trapped in a corporate nightmare who has a curious constant companion.

Following the narrative of four individuals, Ramsey explores the path from the last successes of the Civil Rights Movement to the troubling reality of today.

Crook Manifesto by Colson Whitehead

If I were you, I'd read anything this man writes. A follow-up to his acclaimed Harlem Shuffle, this novel follows New York City into the roiling '70s, evocative of place and the meaning of family.

Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Horror? Check. Romance? Check. The Occult? Check. Well-rounded, complex female characters that solve mysteries in the early '90s of Mexico City? Check.

Somebody's Fool by Richard Russo

Russo is known for tender novels of small-town life that are funny, humane, and full of heart. If you need a book of hope not horror, here is where to look.

The Bellwoods Game by Celia Krampien

Another spooky read about a girl who no longer wants to be an outcast, so she plays a game in the haunted woods and learns playing with legends is not an ideal thing to do. Not only does this book sound intriguing, it also has some awesome art in it as well.

A modern retelling of The Velveteen Rabbit about a little stuff rabbit who must find its child after losing its way. I am a big fan of the illustrator so I'm excited to check this out.
